Meet Gaddam Prasad Kumar, New Speaker of Telangana Assembly

 - Sakshi Post

Hyderabad: Senior Congress MLA Gaddam Prasad Kumar becomes first Dalit Speaker of Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday. He is set to be elected unopposed as he was the only person who filed his nomination for the post and his election will only be a formality. He will be the third Speaker of Telangana Assembly.

Protem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi will announce the unanimous election of Kumar as the Speaker. The eight newly elected MLAs of BJP and remaining MLAs of other parties will take oath before the new speaker today. It’s worth noting that the BJP MLAs had boycotted the oath-taking on the first day of the Telangana assembly. They protested the appointment of AIMIM’s Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi as the protem Speaker, alleging violation of the rules.

Congress picked the dalit leader for the top job to reinforce its commitment to the empowerment of the weaker sections of the state. Kumar is the second Dalit leader after Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Deputy Chief Minister, to hold the high-profile post in the newly elected Congress government of Telangana.

Gaddam Prasad Kumar was elected from Vikarabad constituency in the recent elections. He became an MLA for the first time in 2009 from Vikarabad (SC) constituency on Congress ticket. Later, he found a place in the previous Kiran Kumar Reddy cabinet. He served as Minister for Handlooms and Textile between 2012 and 2014.

In the maiden elections to Telangana Assembly after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Kumar faced defeat at the hands of BRS (previously TRS) candidates Sanjeev Rao. He was defeated by another BRS candidate Dr Methuku Anand in the 2018 assembly elections.
