Ibrahimpatnam: Criminal Case Against Surgeon For Botched Up Family Planning Operation

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has taken a strict action against the medical staff involved in the botched up family planning surgery at Community Health Centre, Ibrahimpatnam in Rangareddy district on August 25. 

A criminal case will be filed against the surgeon responsible for the incident in which four women died. It will also take disciplinary action against 12 other staff members.

The action has been initiated on the basis of a report submitted by the committee which was formed to carry out an inquiry into the incident.

Syed Ali Murtuza Rizvi, Secretary to Government, Health Medical and Family Welfare Department has directed Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao to file a criminal case against Dr Joel Sunil Kumar, the Double Puncture Laparoscopy (DPL) surgeon.

On 25 August, 34 women underwent family planning surgery at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ibrahimpatnam. Within a few days after the surgery, four women died and seven suffered complications. Later, all the 30 women were admitted at two hospitals and they were kept under observation. 

The government also took disciplinary action against 12 other staff members of the Health Department.

They are Ibrahimpatnam Hospital DPL Camp Officer Dr Naga Jyothi, Community Health Centre (CHC) Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Geetha, CHC Head Nurse Chandrakala, Madugul Primary Health Centre (PHC) Medical Officer Dr Srinivas, Supervisors Alivelu and Mangamma, Manchal PHC Medical Officer Dr Kiran, Supervisor Jayalatha, Dandamilaram PHC medical officer Dr Poonam and Supervisor Janakamma.

District Coordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) of Ranga Reddy district Jhansi Lakshmi has been transferred and directed to report at ShadNagar Hospital. And Ibrahimpatnam Hospital Superintendent Dr Sridhar has already been suspended.

Kondapur Area Hospital Superintendent Dr Varadachari has been given additional charge as Ranga Reddy DCHS.
