Diwali 2025 School Holidays: Five-Day Holidays Across Multiple States

With Diwali, the festival of lights, just around the corner, schools across multiple states are preparing to observe an extended holiday period for students. This year, the festive break will span five days, covering major celebrations including Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. The extended closure ensures that students have sufficient time to participate in family traditions and festive activities.

Five-Day Diwali School Holidays

The holiday period begins with Dhanteras on October 18, which falls on a Saturday. While not an official government holiday, many schools that observe the second Saturday off will remain closed. Official school holidays begin on October 19 with Narak Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali) and continue uninterrupted until Bhai Dooj on October 23.

Diwali, the main festival day, will be observed on October 20, followed by Govardhan Puja on October 22. Students in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal will have school closures during this period. This gives children ample opportunity to celebrate the festival with family, participate in rituals, and enjoy sweets.

October Festival Season and Regional Holidays

October has already been a festive month for students, with earlier holidays observed for Navami, Dussehra, and in some states, Valmiki Jayanti. The Diwali holidays represent the longest school break of the month, offering a much-needed pause before classes resume.

Parents are encouraged to confirm the exact holiday schedule with their child’s school, as dates may vary depending on the state or school administration. For most students, however, this period promises a week full of celebration, rest, and family time.
