Secunderabad Railway Station to Get Airport Facilities!

Secunderabad Railway Station, one of the busiest railway hubs in South India, is undergoing a significant transformation as part of modernization efforts. The station's main buildings, constructed in 1952, have been demolished to make way for a state-of-the-art facility that aligns with contemporary infrastructure needs. This structure, which once reflected the art and culture of its time, is now a memory of the past.
A Rich Legacy
The foundation of Secunderabad Railway Station dates back to 1874, built under the rule of the then Nizam Nawab. It served as the headquarters of the Nizam Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR) until 1916. Following the nationalization of NGSR in 1951, the station became part of Indian Railways, and its main building was constructed in 1952. The portico of the railway station, inspired by Nizam-era architecture, was designed to resemble a grand fort.
A Futuristic Makeover
In another year, the railway station is set to resemble a modern airport. The ambitious modernization project, undertaken at a cost of Rs. 720 crore, is progressing at a rapid pace. Authorities have laid out a master plan to equip the station with world-class amenities and infrastructure to enhance passenger convenience.
Key Developments
The redevelopment includes the construction of iconic station buildings with G+3 floors on both the north and south sides. These buildings will house retail shops, food stalls, and entertainment zones, offering passengers a comprehensive travel experience.
The project also introduces significant passenger-friendly features, including:
- Two travelators on either side of the station
- Two spacious walkways for seamless movement
- 26 lifts and 32 escalators for easy accessibility
- Two wide footbridges and a skyway for smoother transit within the station
Additionally, the Secunderabad East Metro Station will be connected to the skyway, enhancing multimodal transport options. On the northern side, a dedicated walkway and a 5,000-kilowatt solar power plant are being set up to promote sustainable energy use.
With these upgrades, Secunderabad Railway Station is poised to emerge as a world-class transit hub, blending modernization with improved passenger comfort and convenience. The transformation marks a new chapter in its history, paving the way for a futuristic and efficient travel experience.
