AP Chambers Urges Rationalisation of Government Holidays for Better Productivity

The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) has called for the list of holidays in the state. The business chamber has requested the Chief Secretary, K Vijayanand, to rationalize and synchronize the holiday list to reduce operational challenges and productivity losses.
The Issue
Currently, different departments in the state, including the Labour Department, Factories Act, General Administration Department, and Reserve Bank of India, issue separate holiday lists. This has resulted in discrepancies in the number and dates of holidays, causing confusion and difficulties for businesses, industries, and financial institutions.
The Proposal
The AP Chambers has proposed several measures to address the issue. These include:
- Preparing a unified State Holiday Calendar applicable across departments, with limited sector-specific variations.
- Classifying holidays into three categories: mandatory national holidays, optional/restricted holidays, and sector-specific holidays.
- Rationalizing the overall number of general holidays to ensure higher productivity.
- Synchronizing holidays across government, banking, and private sectors to avoid delays in business transactions.
- Digital publication of a single consolidated holiday calendar through a unified government portal for transparency and easy access.
The Benefits
The AP Chambers believes that implementing these measures will help reduce operational challenges and productivity losses for businesses. It will also provide clarity and transparency, enabling businesses to plan and operate more efficiently.
A Step Forward
The AP Chambers' proposal is a step towards creating a more business-friendly environment in the state. By streamlining the holiday list and reducing operational challenges, the government can help boost productivity and economic growth.
