Telugu Students Attacked Again On Manipur NIT Campus

This was the second time the non-local students were attacked by locals on the campus

Imphal: The Telugu students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Imphal were attacked once again on Wednesday. The clashes first erupted in September last leading to tensions on the campus for a fortnight. Eight Telugu students were injured in the attack. Frightened by the incident, around 30 students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States locked themselves up in their hostel room. After the government's intervention and stepping up of security on the campus, the clashes subsided.

This Tuesday again, several students, many of them from Telugu states and Bihar, were reportedly injured when some locals barged into the NIT campus and beat them up. A report from Imphal said that heated arguments had taken place during a football match between locals and hostellers on Sunday last.

Following the incident, some locals barged into campus on Wednesday and thrashed students. The students have alleged that when the police were called, they sided with the locals and beat them up with batons and also took some of them into custody.

The parents of the students in the Telugu states, who received frantic calls, informed government officials and requested them to provide security to their wards.

As the news broke out, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu called his Manipur counterpart N. Biren Singh and requested him to provide security to Telugu students. Singh visited the campus and assured the non-local students of safety and security.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also called Biren Singh and requested him to ensure the safety and security of students hailing from his state. Nitish also asked Manipur CM to take stringent action against the accused, who had attacked and beaten up the students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Imphal.

The Chief Minister also asked his senior officers to coordinate with their counterparts in Manipur and look into the matter following which Director General of Police PK Thakur and Principal Secretary (Home) Amir Subhani spoke to their counterparts in the north-eastern state, an official release said.
