Class 5-10 Students In Hyderabad Could Not Read Simple Telugu Or Do Math: Study
Hyderabad: In a worrying trend, an audit by Child Rights Protection Forum and Mother's Forum revealed that many children between Class 5 and 10 can't do basic math or read simple English and Telugu.
The study had a sample size of 2,537 students studying in both private and government schools. The sample covered 11 mandals and 118 slums in Hyderabad district.
It was found that of the 2,537 students, 2,203 students could not write simple words as books, tomato and computer in Telugu. The audit was revealed at a public hearing organised on poor learning outcomes on Tuesday here.
As many as 1,582 students could not do basic subtraction and addition and 2,172 failed to do multiplication and division, it revealed. Also, 2,399 children were unable to solve word problems.
Rights Protection Forum member D Prakash said that it is scary that Class 10 students were unable to write simple words in Telugu and English.
“Even Class 10 students are unable to write simple words and sentences. They are supposed to learn these things by the end of Class 3 and it is scary that even high school students are unable to write simple words in both Telugu and English,” Prakash was quoted saying by a leading daily.
The president of Mother's Forum G Bhagyalaxmi said that the children must be blamed for poor learning outcomes, instead the state and the education system has failed miserably to provide quality education.
Delving into solutions, Bhagyalaxmi said that the state must look for ways to address backlogs. Independent body must be set up to monitor the learning outcomes in both private and government schools.
She lambasted at the state government saying that it was more focused on providing mid-day meals and uniform to students, and was least bothered about the quality of education.
