Netflix in Hyderabad: News Triggers Internet Frenzy, Sparks Debate Over Bengaluru

4 Nov, 2025 12:27 IST

Global streaming giant Netflix has chosen Hyderabad for its second major base in India, leasing a sprawling 41,000-square-foot office in HITEC City. The move comes after the company opened its first India office in Mumbai in 2021.

Industry observers say the decision positions Hyderabad as a key hub for regional content creation and production. According to reports, Netflix plans to house teams handling regional content development, project supervision, technical workflows, and vendor management at the new facility.

Hyderabad vs Bengaluru Debate

The announcement has reignited the familiar Hyderabad vs Bengaluru debate on social media, with many users suggesting that India’s “Silicon Valley” may be losing its edge.

“Hyderabad has offices, but Bengaluru has the minds and the vibes,” one user on X (formerly Twitter) quipped — a sentiment that mirrors the growing narrative of Hyderabad emerging as a preferred destination for both creative and tech investments.

With Hyderabad’s thriving Tollywood ecosystem, the development has also sparked excitement about possible Netflix collaborations with Telugu cinema. “Tollywood x Netflix collab era loading,” one user wrote enthusiastically.

Others expressed surprise at Bengaluru being passed over. “So many companies are choosing Hyderabad over Bangalore to open new offices,” a user noted, while others cited traffic woes, infrastructure issues, and congestion as key deterrents.

Some users saw the shift as part of a broader diversification trend. “It’s healthy that companies are spreading out. Bangalore has reached a threshold — let other cities flourish,” one post read.

Highlighting Hyderabad’s rise, another user shared comparative data: “Office supply 2026: Bengaluru 13M sq ft vs Hyderabad 9M sq ft. New GCCs (last 3 years): Hyderabad 40% → Bengaluru 33%. Costs: Hyderabad rents 30% lower; living 25% cheaper.”

Taking a swipe at the Karnataka government, one user commented, “If I were in charge of Bengaluru, I wouldn’t sleep until traffic and potholes were fixed. Sadly, the ones who are seem to be in deep sleep.”

Interestingly, both Karnataka and Telangana are currently governed by the Congress party.

What This Means for Hyderabad

For Hyderabad, Netflix’s decision is a major vote of confidence. It follows closely on the heels of Vanguard, the world’s second-largest asset management firm (after BlackRock, with over $10 trillion in AUM), opening its Global Value Center at Sattva Knowledge Park in HITEC City.

With this, Hyderabad now hosts seven of the world’s leading asset management firms — Vanguard, State Street Global Advisors, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Invesco, UBS, and Franklin Templeton. Notably, five of these rank among the global top 10.

Netflix’s entry further strengthens the city’s reputation as a dual hub for digital entertainment and technology. The synergy between Hyderabad’s film infrastructure and IT ecosystem uniquely positions it to support both global streaming operations and local creative content.
