IPL 2027 Auction to Return to India After Overseas Editions

16 Sep, 2026 13:15 IST

The IPL 2027 player auction is set to be held in India, marking a return to the country after the previous auctions were conducted overseas. The decision was reportedly taken during the latest IPL Governing Council meeting.

The 2027 auction will be a mini-auction, as the mega auction was conducted ahead of the 2025 season. The mini-auction will give IPL franchises an opportunity to fill vacant slots and strengthen their squads ahead of the 2027 season.

The decision to bring the auction back to India is expected to make things easier for the franchises. Holding an auction overseas involves additional travel and logistical arrangements for team owners, officials and support staff.

In recent years, IPL auctions have been hosted outside India. The 2025 auction was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while the 2026 auction took place in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The 2026 auction was held on December 16, 2025.

The exact date and venue for the IPL 2027 auction have not yet been officially announced. The auction is generally held in December, and reports indicate that the 2027 mini-auction is expected to take place during that period.

Interestingly, the possibility of holding a future IPL mega auction outside India has also been discussed. However, no official venue has been confirmed for that event.

The return of the IPL auction to India is therefore mainly linked to franchise logistics and the practical arrangements involved in hosting the event.
