BLACKPINK Jennie’s Drama ‘The Idol’ To End Early

U.S. media reports that the HBO drama series "The Idol," in which Jennie of the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK had her acting debut, will end a week earlier than expected.

The six-part music drama was originally planned, but it was revealed on Sunday that the fifth episode will serve as the season's finale. On July 2, the last episode, titled "Jocelyn Forever," will premiere.

Unknown reasons may have led to the early end, however Sam Levinson's arrival dramatically affected the drama's plot. After Amy Seimetz stepped down as director, Levinson—best known for his teen drama series "Euphoria"—took over the position and co-created the show with The Weeknd and Reza Fahim.

It remains unclear if the series will be back for a second season. Some reports claimed that the renewal had been cancelled, but HBO denied this on Twitter, June 16.

"It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of 'The Idol' has been determined," it said. "It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night."

The June premiere of "The Idol" centres on Jocelyn, a pop idol. After having a nervous breakdown, she tries to restart her career and finds herself in a complicated connection with the Weeknd, a mysterious club owner in Los Angeles.

One of Jocelyn's backup dancers, Dyanne, is assumed by Jennie in this scene. Thanks to "The Idol," the K-pop sensation attended the official Cannes Film Festival screenings on May 22.

The drama's star-studded cast had created a buzz before its debut, but it immediately came under criticism for its explicit sex scenes. The plot has been called flat, and its viewership ratings have been poor as well.
