CBSE Introduces Dual Board Exams for Class 10 from 2026 – Key Details Inside

In a major step aimed at easing academic pressure on students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has confirmed that Class 10 students will have the opportunity to appear for two board examinations beginning in 2026. The initiative aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and is designed to provide students with greater flexibility and a fair chance to improve their performance.

Mandatory First Examination

According to CBSE official Sanyam Bharadwaj, the first board examination will be compulsory for all Class 10 students. It is scheduled to take place between February 17 and March 9. Students are expected to treat this exam as their primary attempt, as those who do not appear will not be eligible for the second examination.

Optional Second Exam for Score Improvement

The second examination window, set from May 15 to June 1, will serve as an optional opportunity for students who wish to enhance their marks. CBSE has clarified that the better score out of the two attempts will be considered final, ensuring that students benefit from their strongest performance.

Limit on Subjects for Improvement

Students will be allowed to reappear for up to three subjects in the improvement exam. Additionally, those who do not pass in more than two subjects during the first attempt can use the second exam as a compartment opportunity to clear those papers.

No Change in Syllabus

The board has confirmed that the syllabus will remain identical for both examinations, with no reduction in course content for the second attempt. Existing accommodations and relaxations for students with disabilities and sportspersons will continue to apply in both exam sessions.

Guidance for Parents

CBSE has also advised parents to support their children without creating unnecessary pressure to take the second exam. The board emphasized that the purpose of introducing two exams is to reduce stress, not to increase expectations. Students should consider the second attempt only if it genuinely helps improve their academic results.
