Stock Market Holiday Today, Nov 5: NSE, BSE Closed for Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025
The Indian stock market will remain closed today, Wednesday, November 5, 2025, in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. Trading across all segments will resume tomorrow, Thursday, November 6, after the mid-week holiday.
Market Closure After Weak Tuesday Session
Tuesday’s trading session ended on a weak note, with both benchmark indices slipping amid sustained selling pressure from foreign institutional investors (FIIs). The Sensex dropped over 500 points, while the Nifty closed 170 points lower, reflecting cautious investor sentiment ahead of key global economic data releases.
NSE, BSE Shut Across All Segments
Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are closed today across all trading segments — including equity, derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGRs).
According to the 2025 stock market holiday calendar, this is the second market holiday in November and the only one scheduled for the month. With today’s closure, the trading week on Dalal Street will be a four-day week, with normal operations resuming tomorrow.
MCX Trading Also Suspended
The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) has also suspended trading for both morning and evening sessions in observance of the festival. This means commodity markets, including gold, silver, crude oil, and other futures, will remain shut throughout the day and reopen on Thursday, November 6.
Significance of Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, celebrates the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. The day is marked by spiritual celebrations such as Akhand Path (a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib), Nagar Kirtans (religious processions), and Langars (community feasts).
The occasion honours Guru Nanak’s timeless teachings of equality, humility, compassion, and selfless service, which continue to inspire millions of followers around the world.
Remaining Stock Market Holidays in 2025
As per the official holiday calendar, the Indian stock market will observe 14 trading holidays in total for 2025. After today’s closure for Guru Nanak Jayanti, the final holiday of the year will fall on December 25 (Christmas).
Apart from these official holidays, both exchanges remain closed on all Saturdays and Sundays as part of the regular weekend schedule.
What to Expect When Markets Reopen
Once trading resumes on Thursday, analysts expect the focus to return to corporate earnings, global economic cues, and foreign fund flows. With FIIs turning net sellers in recent sessions, domestic investors are likely to track international markets and commodity prices, particularly oil and gold, which have shown notable volatility in recent days.
