Andhra Pradesh India’s Second Best State In Health

Niti Aayog - Sakshi Post

Hyderabad: Showing incredible improvement, the state of Andhra Pradesh has been ranked second best in terms of overall health performance.

In the second round of its health index report titled ‘The Healthy States, Progressive India: Report on Rank of States and UTs’ released by NITI Aayog on Tuesday, Kerala retained its position by emerging as the top ranking state. Andhra Pradesh has emerged to become the second healthiest state in the country, taking a big leap from the eighth position.

Covering key aspects of health sector performance, the Health Index is a composite score incorporating 23 indicators. Compared to Health Index scores from 2015-16, the changes varied significantly across states and Union Territories pointing to different levels of momentum in performance improvement.

According to the release, Uttar Pradesh ranked as the worst. Telangana meanwhile reached one slot higher to the 10th position.

In terms of overall performance, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra emerged as the top three states. The report stated that the most significant progress in ranks has been observed in Andhra Pradesh with the average composite health index score increasing from 53.22 to 65.13 in the state.

This has been attributed to 100 percent full immunization coverage along with fully operationalized Human Resources Management Information System (HRMIS) for 100 percent of staff. Following AP, Rajasthan and Maharashtra also witnessed an improvement in their ranking by four and three positions respectively. Telangana, Karnataka, Haryana, and Assam improved their ranking by one position each.

Leaving Jharkhand, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, the Tuberculosis success rates deteriorated in most states. 10 other states including Telangana have partially operationalised the HRMIS for 12 to 86 percent of staff. The states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha witnessed a decline in the overall health index score.

The report said that the decline in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh was mainly due to TB (tuberculosis) treatment success rate, total fertility rate, low birth weight, the sex ratio at birth, quality accreditation of public health facilities, and time taken for NHM (National Health Mission) fund transfer.
