Corruption Will Not Be Tolerated: CM YS Jagan

Amaravati: Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday held a meeting with the committee of experts to investigate the irregularities taken place in the irrigation projects in the last five years. Water Resources Minister Anil Kumar Yadav was also present at the meeting.

Special Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department, Adityanath Das issued the government order to constitute the eight-member committee on June 14 to examine the processes followed by the previous Telugu Desam government in tendering, launching and executing engineering works in water resources, Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA), roads and buildings (R and B), municipal administration and urban development, rural water supply and other departments. The Chief Minister said the committee has been constituted to prevent corruption and rectify discrepancies in the projects. The panel of experts has been asked to submit the report within 45 days.

The committee comprises of retired chief engineer Abdul Basheer, retired engineer-in-chief (ENC), (irrigation) L Narayana Reddy, former president of Structural Engineers Association of India, P Suryaprakash, retired ENC (R and B) P Subbaraya Sharma, retired ENC(R and B) FCS Peter, retired director of APGenco I Adisheshu, and retired chief engineer of Central Designs Organisation ISN Raju with the chief technical examiner of water resources department as the convener of the committee.
The Expert Committee has set up three sub-committees to complete the inquiry within the stipulated deadline.

Expert committee member Surya Prakash said that CM YS Jagan had instructed him to look into the past projects and provide the estimations adding that the Chief Minister will be meeting with the committee again in 15 days where the shortcomings of the engineering work in various branches will be examined.

Speaking at the meeting, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said corruption in the construction of projects should not be allowed adding that desperate measures needed to be taken to repair the damaged system. He reiterated that corruption will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Mentioning that they have to identify the projects to implement reverse tendering, YS Jagan said that the AP government should establish a name for its transparency and a judicial commission across the country.

CM Jagan addressed the meeting on the irregularities in the construction of the Polavaram project. The panel of experts has been ordered to put an end to irregularities in the work of Polavaram project. He said, "The state is in dire financial constraints and corruption was making the situation worse. Besides Polavaram, major projects in the state have to be identified where reverse tendering is possible."

Explaining that the last government had misused the Polavaram project, he said that without completing the spillway, they went to the cofferdam and left it midway. He said, "Now if a flood situation arises, the result would be a situation where no works can be accomplished for a period of four months." CM Jagan made it clear that Polavaram is his most important project.
